The UL Political Science Department Welcomes You!
Welcome to the web site for the Department of Political Science (POLS) and its programs at the University
of Lousiana at Lafayette. Our programs offer a degree/major in Political Science with optional concentrations in either Pre-Law or International Relations.
Political Science is an exciting and challenging field for undergraduate study. When students major in our program,
they will study topics from law to voting politics and local government to international relations and affairs in an effort to understand the
political interactions between government and individuals. The Department of Political Science degree/major and its programs share the
core values of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and its College of Liberal Arts:
excellence in education, research, and public service. Our particular discipline
of Political Science is dedicated to promoting the analytic study of government and human politics,
or what Socrates called the "science of the soul." Our department has chosen to focus on a select group of the University of Louisiana’s official
strategic imperatives: "enhancing student engagement and success, facilitating quality teaching and learning, and
preparing our students to thrive as global citizens." Our top priority--in addition to teaching advanced reading,
writing, and critical thinking skills in our courses and promoting student recruitment and retention through
quality advising and support--is to provide the foundational knowledge, critical awareness and fundamental skills necessary
for both national and global citizenship. In short, through teaching, research, and public service, the
Department of Political Science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette shares and advances the goals of
the larger University community and the state of Louisiana, especially the essential goal of promoting a
flourishing civil society and good government.
