Welcome Welcome to the web site for the Department of Political Science (POLS) at the University of Lousiana at Lafayette. Political Science is an exciting and challenging field for undergraduate study. It addresses topics from law to voting politics to international affairs in its efforts to understand the interactions between government and individuals. The Department of Political Science shares the core values and principles of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and its College of Liberal Arts: excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, in research, and in public service. Our particular discipline is dedicated to promoting the analytic study of human politics, or what Socrates called the "science of the soul." Because our department is relatively small, we focus on a select group of the University of Louisiana’s official strategic imperatives: "enhancing student engagement and success, facilitating quality teaching and learning, and preparing our students to thrive as global citizens." Our top priority--in addition to teaching advanced reading, writing, and critical thinking skills in our courses and promoting student recruitment and retention through quality advising--is to provide the foundational knowledge, critical awareness and fundamental skills necessary for both national and global citizenship. In short, through teaching, research, and public service, the Department of Political Science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette shares and advances the goals of the larger University community and the state of Louisiana, especially the essential goal of promoting a flourishing civil society.
